This paper is concerned with the synchronization of two nonlinear (possibly chaotic) systems, modeling a transmitter and a receiver in a communications network. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEFor this purpose an adaptive observer for estimating the unknown parameters of the transmitter is proposed based on a quadratic Lyapunov function. Under the assumptions of hyper-minimum-phase and persistent excitation properties it is shown that the proposed observer achieves the desired synchronization. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe proposed observer is illustrated by simulation results for a signal transmission example based on two synchronizing instances of Chua's circuit.
