The quantum theory of magnetism (Q2710178)

This is a descriptive compilation of results in the application of quantum and statistical mechanics to microscopic magnetic material and is meant to be a text-book for advanced students in experimantal physics, chemistry and engineering. Experimental workers need to know these results without necessarily knowing how they come about and are usually not too concerned with the deductive thread connecting various parts of the theory. The account is competent though dated: only about 1\% are of works published after 1995. Readers interested in finer points are referred to over 250 well-chosen references and there are 60 exercises to test the reader's understanding of the descriptions. Essential definitions and results of group theory are described in a 12 page appendix and those of time reversal in another appendix six pages long. All in all this is a useful and welcome addition to the literature on microscopic magnetic material.
