[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.]NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThis book presents the results of research carried out at the European level between industry and universities. The members of this group developed fault-tolerant software oriented and multilevel architectures for use on a computer. The field of application is rather broad (railway, space, nuclear propulsion) but the goal is here to provide a generic structure which might be modulated to various types of applications. Other constraints are that one wants a system which will be able to handle many kinds of faults and which also will satisfy real-time functioning. From the text: ``This book describes the rationale of the generic architecture, the design and validation of its communication, scheduling and fault-tolerance components, and the tools that make up its design and validation environment.'' The chapters written by several scientists develop these aspects.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThere is a list of abbreviations and references at the end of the volume.
