Consider a vacuum spacetime with an isometry, and \(\xi\) a Killing vector field. The exterior derivative of (the 1-form associated to) \(\xi\) is a 2-form satisfying the Maxwell equations without electromagnetic sources. Using the symmetries of \(\xi\), the authors suggest a new classification of such spacetimes. Links between this classification and the Petrov one are established.
