This book is the first volume of a series of four monographs written by the same author. The series is devoted to modeling of mechanical systems, and presents theoretical elements necessary for modeling and studying the behaviour of mechanical systems. The author uses concepts and techniques directly related to numerical calculations, focusing on linear problems. The present volume ``Discrete systems'' introduces the main notions and concepts used in the whole series. The author presents extensively equilibrium equations, starting from Hamilton's principle of minimum action.
