Let \(M\) be a closed smooth manifold, \(N\subset M\) a closed smooth submanifold, and \(L\) a nonsingular real algebraic variety diffeomorphic to \(N\). The authors give a cohomological obstruction for existence of a nonsingular real algebraic variety \(X\) and diffeomorphism \(f:M\to X\) such that \(f(N)\) is an algebraic subvariety of \(X\) isomorphic to \(L\).
