The authors report on calculations and experiments with strong shocks diffracting over rigid ramps in argon. The numerical results are obtained by integrating the conservation equations that include Navier-Stokes equations. The results demonstrate that, if the ramp angle is less than the shock detachment angle, then the onset of Mach reflection is delayed by the appearance of a precursor regular reflection. The predictions are confirmed experimentally by twice photographing the diffracting shock as it travels along the ramp. Early German work on Mach reflection by Weise (1943) and Eggingk (1943), and the limiting cases of Mach reflection studied by Wuest (1946) seem to be unknown to the authors.
