The paper deals with discrete strings which are collections of finite masses located in the interval \((0,1)\). A bijection between a discrete string problem with positive weights to Jacobi matrices is shown. This gives a unified picture of the Toda, Jacobi and multipeakon flows. Also explicit solutions of the Jacobi flow are found via Stieltjes determination of the continued fraction expansion of a Stieltjes transformation. Generalized strings with positive and negative weights are also studied via singular Jacobi matrices.
