The author studies the topological and metric structure of two-dimensional manifolds endowed with a metric, which is locally a metric of revolution. In the case of compact manifolds a complete description is given. This description explains why there are no compact analytic surfaces of revolution in \(\mathbb{R}^3\), except for a sphere and a torus.
