The authors propose an optimized method for synthesizing FIR (finite impulse response) digital filters for application in PSK (phase shift keying) and QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation). The method is based on the minimization of the energy loss of the filter, which may be used to characterize the performance of the demodulation. After describing the problem and the system model, the paper analyzes the relations between the energy loss and the filter characteristics. In the main part, the method for synthesis of the modulator and the demodulator filter is introduced. The results are discussed for asymmetrical and for symmetrical impulse response filters separately. An experimental verification is given.
