Caries on permanent teeth: A nonparametric Bayesian analysis (English)

The article is devoted to a case study of dental data for 240 boys from rural municipalities in Finland. For each of the 28 teeth of each boy the authors are interested in the lifetime of the tooth, i.e. the time from the tooth's eruption to it's failure. The moments of eruption and failure are not observed. The data consist of the findings made by dentists in a series of examinations.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe authors consider a model which includes tooth specific failure and eruption intensities and subject (boy) specific frailty coefficients. The intensities are modeled by piecewise constant functions. Posterior sample generators for parameters are made by a Metropolis-Hastings-Green algorithm. As a result, nonparametric estimates for eruption and failure intensities are obtained.
