Analysing data on lengths of stay of hospital patients using phase-type distributions (English)
0 references
The aim of this paper is to apply phase-type distributions, which describe the time to absorption of a continuous-time Markov chain, to the analysis of some data on lengths of stay of hospital patients. The data analysed in this paper are taken from \textit{S. I. McClean} and \textit{P. Millard} [The Statistician 42, 263-274 (1993)] and refer to male geriatric patients at St. George's Hospital, London, over the period 1969-1985. Durations of hospital treatment were available from a number of patients, along with two covariates: age at admission and year of admission. This analysis is concerned with finding a suitable distribution to describe the variation in the duration times and assessing the effects of the covariates on this distribution.
