This paper explains some joint work of \textit{David Catlin} and the author [Math. Res. Lett. 3, No. 2, 149-166 (1996; Zbl 0858.32010); ibid. 4, No. 4, 555-567 (1997; Zbl 0886.32015); ibid. 6, No. 1, 43-60 (1999; Zbl 0956.32020)] about positivity conditions for bihomogeneous polynomials. The author presents a simplified proof of a special case of the main result of the third paper as well as a self-contained proof of a generalization of the main result of the first paper.
