In the early 60's, the same time as Lorenz did his first works on chaos, Yoshisuke Ueda observed chaos in a periodically forced nonlinear oscillator using an analog computer. This was possibly the first example of a strange attractor. The paper describes the difficult and long way before these results had been acknowledged by the scientific community.NEWLINENEWLINEFrom the text: This article was first presented at the international symposium entitled ``The Impact of Chaos on Science and Society,'' where I was invited as a guest speaker. The symposium was organized by the United Nations University and the University of Tokyo, and held in Tokyo between 15-17 April, 1991.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0958.00013].
