In 1931 M. Ya. Vygodskiĭ (1898--1965) published a course on differential and integral calculus which met sharp objections from the most part of teachers and specialists because of a nontraditional approach based on actual infinitesimals. N. N. Luzin was the only one of the leading Soviet mathematicians who supported Vygodskiĭ. The paper under review contains some comments on two letters on the subject written by Luzin to Vygodskiĭ in the early 1930s.
