The study of rational points on algebraic curves was begun by Poincaré in 1901. The present article studies precursors of this work by Jacobi, Sylvester, and others, beginning with Lagrange's 1777 method of finding a new rational solution for a general cubic curve in two variables using a known rational solution and Cauchy's 1826 extension of this method to three variables.
