The article offers a refutation of T. Slavova's hypothesis on the Bulgarian origin of the ``Teaching'', an arithmetical work on the calendar by Kirik of Novgorod (1136). The author gives a thorough textual analysis of every part of Kirik's work and mentions the points in which he differs from Slavova's opinion. He also carries trough arithmetical calculations and compares Kirik's explanations with those in the so-called ``seven thousands'' (semitysjachnik). The author concludes as a result of his argumentation that Kirik's ``Teaching'' has Russian origins. The debate touches on the broader topic of the origins and the history of Russian language with its lively discussed problems.
