The author asserts that the theoretical probabilistic work of Buniakovsky has not been adequately examined. The present article has already appeared, in essence, in English as [\textit{O. B. Sheynin}, Arch. Hist. Exact Sci. 43, 199-223 (1991; Zbl 0766.01020)]. Some additional information is available in the reviewer's article [ibid. 53, 201-213 (1998; Zbl 0917.01019)] Section 2.7 of Sheynin's paper relates largely to M. V. Ostrogradsky's (1801-1862) contribution to quality control; this has also more recently been examined by the reviewer, and is to appear in a book (to be published in the Ukraine) commemorating the 200th anniversary of Ostrogradsky's birth.
