Denjoy, and a reply of Denjoy. All these letters discuss the so-called ``Luzin affair'', the role of Soviet mathematicians in this affair, and how to help Luzin. There are numerous comments of the author, P. Dugac, and of the translator N. S. Ermolayeva. The end of the article is a two-page long obituary of P.
