John Collins (1625-1683), himself an author of a book on commercial arithmetic, was by far more influential as scientific correspondent and initiator of some editorial enterprises. The paper describes his efforts (involving I. Barrow, I. Newton, J. Wallis and others) aimed at a new book on algebra which stimulated its development.
