The authors discuss the diagonal argument of Georg Cantor and various interpretations given in the first half of the XXth century. There are presented works of A. N. Kolomogoroff, V. K. Petrossian, P. S. Alexandroff, K. Gödel and others. Other aspects of the diagonal argument can be found in two papers published in the volume ``Traditional logic and Cantorian diagonal argument'' (Moscow, 1997), one by \textit{D. I. Vinner} (pp. 5-21), the other by the authors of this paper (pp. 22-29).
