The authors consider the steady three-dimensional creeping flow of a viscous incompressible fluid contained in a circular finite cylinder induced by prescribed tangential velocity on the cylinder surface. The authors develop an analytical method for solving the general problem and, as application, study the case of lid-driven cavity flow. It is shown that the local behaviour of velocity field near the cylinder rim with discontinuity in velocities is similar to that of Goodier-Taylor velocity field in a two-dimensional wedge. The kinematics of corner eddy structures is illustrated by several numerical examples which show that the structure of corner eddies is more complicated compared with the well-known Moffatt corner eddies.
