The author's book `Connections. The geometric bridge between art and science' (first ed. in 1991 (Zbl 0729.51001)) is intended to show connections between mathematics and realizations of mathematical objects in art, architecture and natural sciences, called Design Science.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe following subjects from the contents of the book, reflect this connection and the mathematical background:NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- similarity in natureNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- the golden mean NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- phyllotaxis, Daisy structuresNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- quasicrystal, Penrose tilingsNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- Platonic solidsNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- reflections, symmetryNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- wallpaper patterns, islamic tilings, etc.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe main difference to the first edition is the fact that in the 2nd ed. the development of Design Science within the last ten years is reflected. These aspects are presented in the preface to the 2nd ed. and the sections `Supplements' and `New References for the Second Edition' at the end of the book. The supplements include information onNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- snub figuresNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- uniform polyhedraNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- the Dorman like construction of dual facesNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- Buckminster fullerenesNEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE-- recent work of Haresh Lalvani (a continuation of contributions from the 1st ed.).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe author points out that in general the interest in Design Science has enormously grown, reflected in numerous conferences, new research, new creations of art works (e.g. polyhedral sculptures), new journals and new courses on mathematics and design.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEOn the personal side the author points out that the appearance of `Connections' has enriched, his life by many contacts with famous researchers in different areas of science. These contacts are reflected in the author's new book `Beyond Measure: A guided tour through nature, myth and number', to be published by World Scientific which should enrich and inspirate the reader as much as his presented book `Connections'.
