The paper gives an introduction to the boundary control theory of reversible linear partial differential equations. In the first part the observability of the one-dimensional and of the multidimensional wave equation is considered. The second section is devoted to Hilbert's uniqueness method illustrated on the wave equation and on a simple plate model. In the third part stabilizing feedbacks are treated. Finally the construction of very efficient stabilizing feedbacks is given.
