The paper is devoted to the role of Descartes in establishing mathematical symbolism. Comparing Cardan's ``Ars magna'' (1545) and Descartes' ``Geometrie'' (1637) with respect to the used notation the author asks how and why did such drastic changes take place. He attempts to suggest historical and epistemological answers to these questions. An analysis of Descartes' rule regarding the establishing of the representation of powers, of equality and of aggregation is also provided.
