The author explains that R. Descartes, in writing his (partly unpublished ``Le monde ou traité de la lumiére'' around 1630, arrived at three ``rules'' which are intended to describe basic laws of motions and which foreshadow the later systematic approach toward mechanics in the works of Ch. Huygens and I. Newton.
