The editors of this fine book, have made a good job in providing a publication which will be of interest to many people: organizers of doctoral programs in mathematics education, researches in this area and potential Ph.D. students. The historical background, the state of the art of these programs and main challenges to be faced are presented in a series of informative papers which are well prepared. While the focus of the AMS-MAA book is on American education, many conclusions may be of interest in other countries. Thus, the book may stimulate discussions and be of help in future developments of doctoral programs.
