This booklet presents a short introduction to wavelet theory. Starting with Haar wavelets, the basics of Fourier analysis and signal theory are introduced. Then the multiresolution analysis and wavelet algorithms are described. Further, orthogonal compactly supported wavelets and semi-orthogonal spline wavelets are constructed. The theory of univariate wavelets is extended to periodic wavelets and bivariate tensor product wavelets. Applications to image compression are given.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEFinally, the characterization of Hölder continuous and smooth functions by means of the corresponding wavelet expansions is sketched. This text is mainly written for graduate students.
