The editors collected about 50 articles dealing with the major aspects of mathematics related to our daily life or to easily understandable applications to other sciences. Some of these features have been propagated at several occasions within the activities of the World Mathematical Year 2000. Others are very well-known in engineering sciences, biology, medicine or art and presented at a level which also attracts the attention of non-experts. The collection demonstrates successfully that mathematics is present in a lot of subjects which commonly are assumed to have nothing to do with mathematics.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThis success is strongly supported by the excellent expositions of the single contributions. Every article starts with some fundamental general statements about the subject on one page and a high quality photo related to this on the next page. Then an expert for the corresponding subject explains on 2-4 pages in a rather condensed but also motivating way, what the relation of the photo to the subject is and what the mathematical achievements behind and the impact in the applied area are. Though mathematicians generally are aware of all these fascinating relations to what is considered as non-mathematical by the general public, they will enjoy this visual journey through a lot of applied aspect of mathematics. But more importantly, according to my experience people, who considered mathematics as something frightening, sophisticated and non-related to real life, will find this collection highly interesting and start to understand that mathematics is different from their unpleasant experiences they had during their time at school.
