It is well-known in Hawking's theory of black holes that the event horizon of a stationary space-time is topologically a 2-sphere. In the present paper, the author proves the Riemannian analogue of this result. More precisely, each bolt of a complete noncompact Einstein manifold of zero scalar curvature admitting a semifree isometric circle action is topologically a 2-sphere. The author also considers the structure of an Einstein manifold which admits a free isometric circle action.
