This book was first published in 1996 and completely revised in 1999. Its third edition has again been expanded. It is intended for students of engineering sciences and aimes at giving them thorough understanding of the foundations of computer science. It has four parts covering four main themes, which are very different in extent and content: I. foundations (algorithms, programming languages, operating systems), II. programming in C/C++ (with introduction into object oriented programming), III. micro-computers (based on the 80(x)86 architecture), IV. networks (LAN's, network operating systems, internet). NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEParts II and III together comprise 3/4 of the volumes content. The reader will find a complete and detailed course of programming in C++, mostly in functional style, but with a separate introduction into the object oriented features of C++. Part III first in detail explains the representation of numbers in microcomputers, then continues with an equally detailed course of assembler programming. In both cases the reader will find numerous examples and exercises (the solutions can be found on the related website). The old, but easily available DOS-command DEBUG is being used to get the examples going (for more see the website). NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEParts I and IV share the rest of the book. Part I gives the necessary prerequisites for parts II and III, while part IV is mostly independent from previous chapters. Both are in my opinion somewhat old-fashioned, but perhaps sufficient for a first contact with the material. The appendices give some tables and the complete set of assembler and debug instructions.
