The authors describe a procedure to calculate from a given embedding of a not necessarily normal projective toric variety into projective space an upper bound for the degrees of its defining equations. They calculate these bounds explicitly in the case of projective toric curves. The proof of the upper bound is based on previous results on syzygies of affine toric varieties given by \textit{A.
