Aristotle gave the adjective \(\varepsilon\nu\delta o\xi o\zeta\) ``held in esteem, notable'' the particular meaning of ``resting on opinion, probable, opposite to what is necessarily true.'' Avicenna translated the word by maḥmūd ``laudable''. The author notes that Avicenna, in his Rhetoric, distinguishes between what is accepted without discussion in appearance or in reality. The author investigates in depth the shortcuts that distinguish rhetoric, apparent logic for the masses, from logic and dialectic which is the science if syllogistic proof accessible only to the elite.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe paper, interesting for students of philosophical terminology, has no mathematical content.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0959.00025].
