The Italian geometry and Hilbert's Grundlagen der Geometrie (English)

The author is investigating the question whether or not the Italian masters of axiomatic geometry (such as Peano, Segre, Veronese, Pieri and Fano, to mention only a few) had any influence upon Hilbert when he wrote his famous work ``Grundlagen der Geometrie''. We learn first that many of these Italian mathematicians had probably been stimulated and influenced by German geometers such as Klein and Pasch, and that they didn't all agree in their different lines to tackle the problems, especially with respect to higher than 3-dimensional spaces. However, since only Veronese is mentioned in the introduction of Hilbert's article, the author finally favors the conclusion that Hilbert didn't know much about the heavy discussions going on south of the Alps, which he explains by the fact that Hilbert had altogether a different goal in mind.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0953.00026].
