The paper surveys the description of the structure of involution rings within the category of involution rings where morphisms have to preserve also the involution. The paper includes also more recent results such as the characterizations of *-simple rings with minimal *-biideals by Rees matrix rings and that of *-prime rings and *-prime ideals, the embeddability of involution rings (with d.c.c. on *-biideals) as a *-ideal into an involution ring with identity (and with d.c.c. on *-biideals), and the connection between d.c.c. and a.c.c. on *-biideals.
