A new approach to a question raised by \textit{J. A. Deddens} [Lect. Notes Math. 693, 77-86 (1978; Zbl 0405.47029)] is presented via two localization principles: an operator version of a Tauberian type theorem due to Katznelson-Tzafriri and a result based on power-bounded operators given by Gelfand-Hille.
