Modified slender body theory for a structure of variable cross-section (English)
0 references
The authors present a general methodology for computing the hydrodynamic force and moment distribution acting on a slender three-dimensional structure with a variable, generally time-dependent circular cross-section (including sharp discontinuities). The structure is embedded in an arbitrary time-dependent and spatially nonuniform ambient flow of perfect fluid. The newly found nonlocal terms, due to the variability of the cross-section, can lead to a significant increase in the cross-sectional loading due to certain types of resonant interactions between the ambient flow-field nonuniformity and the geometric shape variability of the structure.
