The author studies the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation~I NEWLINE\[NEWLINE (u_t+u_{xxx}+uu_x)_x+au_{yy} = f_x, \quad a=\pm 1.\tag{1} NEWLINE\]NEWLINE The existence conditions are established for the global in time solutions to the Cauchy problem for the equation (1). Some properties of solutions to the linearised equation (1) are discussed.
