This paper is an overview of approximation methods for nonlinear control systems. Approximation methods such as optimal quasi-linearization, pseudolinearization, the linearization family, approximate input/output linearization, approximate state feedback linearization, singular perturbation and the center manifold method for the design of nonlinear control systems are briefly reviewed here. Both the advantages and disadvantages of related approximation methods are also analyzed. There is a bibliography of 49 items.
