Starting from some ideas of \textit{G. E. Andrews} [\(q\)-series: their development and applications in analysis, number theory, combinatorics, physics, and computer algebra (Reg. Conf. Ser. Math. 66) (1986; Zbl 0594.33001)], the authors of the present paper examine the general theory of inverse chains of arbitrary inverse relations, giving emphasis on the inverse chains of \textit{H. W. Gould} and \textit{L. C. Hsu} [Duke Math. J. 40, 885-891 (1973; Zbl 0281.05008)]. A few new identities are obtained.
