This is an introductory textbook on finite element methods for partial differential equations. The practical details on grid generation, setting up the computer programs, and solving the matrix problems are presented in detail. As is to be expected, the principal emphasis is on elliptic boundary value problems, but methods for time-evolution problems are also discussed. The chapters on numerical methods for solving linear and nonlinear finite-element discretized problems will be very useful to the readers. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe only weak point of the book is that the causes and cures for locking might have been explained more fully. The authors offer a web site containing problems, examples, and computer programs. The programs are written in C++ in Borland Windows and Unix versions.
