Planetary rings with shepherds (English)
0 references
The authors consider a system of planetary rings with shepherd satellites as a reduced four-body problem, neglecting the interaction between ring particles. The authors also use a billiard scattering model consisting of two rotating discs in the context of formation of planetary rings. The arrangement of symmetric periodic and stable orbits is found. In the space they lead to the appearance of patterns similar to planetary rings. The model includes mechanisms which may destroy some of the rings. These erosion processes are discussed to explain the existence of a finite number of braids in Saturn's F ring, and the absence of observed braids in Epsilon ring of Uranus.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0958.00039].
