A Hamiltonian definition of mass is given for \(n+1\)-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes with a background spacetime which is anti-de Sitter or a generalization thereof. The spacetime has to be asymptotic to the background metric. The mass is shown to be a geometric invariant and to coincide with the mass definition in generalizations of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. Further geometric invariants related to Killing vectors of the background metric are identified.
