In order to understand the topology of the universe, we must study in detail the possible topologies of its spatial ``component''. In the compact case, this problem is connected to the classification of compact 3-manifolds, dominated by Thurston's conjecture. Following this idea, the authors construct a class of spatially compact spacetimes, with locally homogeneous ``bricks'' glued by embedded 2-spheres. The dynamics of two specific models are discussed.
