One consider a distributed control system with time delay NEWLINE\[NEWLINE{\partial Q\over\partial t}= D\Delta Q+AQ+ EQ(x,t-\tau) +Bu(x,t)NEWLINE\]NEWLINE with Dirichlet boundary conditions: here \(A,B,D,E\) are matrices and \(\Delta\) is the Laplace operator. A sliding mode (discontinuous) controller is chosen and the synthesis approach is quite elementary. Stability is proved using a quadratic Lyapunov functional.
