Conclusions: This paper provides a technique to answer the questions (i) ``for what performance requirements \((H_\infty\) bound) is active control necessary?''. (ii) ``what is the optimal stiffness, damping and mass distribution throughout a structure?'' and (iii) ``what is the optimal distribution of control energy throughout a structure?''NEWLINENEWLINE Such results depend strongly on the performance constrains imposed on the design. The method here integrates the structure design with the control design. The resultant system guarantees certain robustness \((H_\infty\) norm is bounded) and minimum control energy \((H_2\) norm is optimized). If for the given robustness requirement the minimum active control energy is zero, then a passive design to reach the guaranteed robustness is obtained. The method is illustrated for a simplified model of a 5-story building to obtain both passive and active designs.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0959.00020].
