In this English translation of the second edition, the author has expanded the material of the first edition [see the review by \textit{J. Wolfart}, Zbl 0917.94011]. For instance, further examples of cryptographic algorithms (Rabin and El Gamal procedures) are provided. A new chapter, Rijndael: A successor to the data encryption standard, has also been added.
