With the help of a Green's function method the electrostatic potential of test charge distributions in a Schwarzschild spacetime is given. A multipole expansion of the potential reveals that for an observer at infinity only the monopole term survives if the (arbitrary) charge distribution approaches the horizon. This leads to a Reissner-Nordström black hole. The force on the charge distribution is discussed.
