The author discusses various approaches to introducing the notion of a distance between two continuous, differentiable, or integrable functions. Then this notion is used to prove the first ``embeddedness'' theorems (for example, \(C[a,b]\subset L_2[a,b]\)).NEWLINENEWLINEThe article is based on a lecture given by the author for secondary school teachers in the framework of the ``International Soros Science Educational Program'' and is aimed at presenting contemporary developments in mathematics on an elementary level understandable for secondary school teachers and pupils.
