This short survey article gives an exceptionally clear introduction to the theory of continued fractions, including the author's own specialty, the Markoff spectrum. Although, as the author states, much of the paper is an elaboration of themes of [\textit{J. W. S. Cassels}, An introduction to Diophantine approximation, Cambridge Univ. Press (1957; Zbl 0077.04801)], it is well worth reading in its own right.
